Part of the Allegheny Front, which West Virginia shares with Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, where it goes on as Cumberland & the Allegheny Front, Altoona, Johnstown & the Alleghenies and the Alleghany Highlands.
The high valleys and Allegheny Front gather Canaan, Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls.
Sugar maple, red maple, oak, hickory and beech colour the ridges and deep wooded valleys.
