About this site and where the pictures come from

The sources, the dates and the care behind the pictures.

This site gathers photographs and camera stills of autumn colour across the Northeast and beyond, each with the day it was taken, along with a few live cameras and the forecasters’ guesses at when each place will peak, so that you can see where the colour is before you drive. The pictures come from the people and the cameras named beside them. New pictures show faintly on the map, marked as not yet looked at, until a person has, and leave it after eight days if no one does; the rest stay only after a look. Nothing here is a promise of what you will find: a storm, a frost or a week of wind can change a valley in a day.

How the pictures are chosen

The daily search looks for recent photographs with a place and a date. A weekly look checks the wider set of places, cameras and reports. The saved notes say what each picture shows, where and when it was taken, and whether leaves can be seen clearly.

A photograph can show one tree, a park or a distant hillside. Its date and photographer stay beside it; a camera’s saved picture keeps its recorded day and time. Colour in a photograph is never a count of trees that have turned.

The daily check

New pictures are looked for every morning at about 7:23, Eastern time. A check can finish later or miss a day; the dates beside the pictures show what is available.

The last check finished on . That was more than a day before this page was made, so the newest pictures may be older than usual.
