Part of the Allegheny Plateau, which West Virginia shares with Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania, where it goes on as Deep Creek Lake & the western mountains, Chautauqua, Allegany & the western hills, the Allegheny National Forest & Kinzua, Elk Country & the upper Clarion, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon & Pine Creek and Washington, Greene & the Monongahela hills.
Morgantown and the Cheat's wooded hills make the northern mountain gateway.
Sugar maple, red maple, oak, hickory and beech colour the ridges and deep wooded valleys.
