The Hatfield-McCoy country & southern coalfields
Part of the Cumberland Mountains, which West Virginia shares with Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, where it goes on as Cumberland Falls, Pine Mountain & the coalfields, Big South Fork & the Cumberland Mountains and Heart of Appalachia.
Steep wooded hollows cut through the southern coalfields and the Hatfield-McCoy trail country.
October brings red and orange maple to the steep hollows, with yellow hickory and the later russets of oak on the ridges above.
