Heart of Appalachia
Part of the Cumberland Mountains, which Virginia shares with Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, where it goes on as Cumberland Falls, Pine Mountain & the coalfields, Big South Fork & the Cumberland Mountains and the Hatfield-McCoy country & southern coalfields.
The far southwest shares the Cumberland ridges, coalfield towns and Clinch valleys.
Oak, maple, hickory, birch and beech colour the ridges and river valleys.
