Part of the Blue Ridge, which Virginia shares with Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, where it goes on as Blue Ridge, Ellijay & the apple country, Blairsville, Dahlonega & the high mountains, Rabun, Tallulah Gorge & the northeastern mountains, Oconee, Pickens & the Blue Ridge escarpment, Greenville & the northern Upstate and Johnson City, Roan Mountain & the northeast highlands.

The park's central ridge and eastern foothills gather Skyline's best-known overlooks.

Oak, maple, hickory, birch and beech colour the ridges and river valleys.
