Part of the Appalachian Plateau, which Kentucky shares with Ohio, where it goes on as Youngstown & the Mahoning Valley, Newark, Zanesville & the Muskingum, Hocking Hills & the Athens country and Chillicothe, Shawnee & the southern hills.
Cave Run Lake and Carter's caves lead east through wooded foothills toward the Big Sandy.
Oak and hickory cover the ridges, with maple and tuliptree in the hollows.
