Trees

When each tree turns, the colors it brings and how much of the forest it makes, from Québec to the Smokies and out to the Rockies, with the color of open ground and planted trees along the way.

Where the weeks and shares come from

The shares are four grades, from “in its own places” to “most of the forest”, rather than measured proportions. The weeks were measured at Harvard Forest for ten trees; the record’s words supply the rest. Beyond the maple country the weeks move by a rule until observations replace it, except where a source gives a local window. Where the weeks were measured, gray begins around the observed days when half the leaves had fallen; it does not mean every leaf was gone. This year’s mark is Autumn Guide’s model of the regional forest state, beside the reports with their dates; it is never an estimate for an individual tree.
