Part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which North Carolina shares with Virginia, where it goes on as Grayson Highlands, Mount Rogers & Abingdon, Floyd, Mabry Mill & the Parkway and Roanoke & the Peaks of Otter.

Boone, Blowing Rock and Grandfather mark the northern mountain High Country.

Sugar maple, red maple, oak, birch and beech colour the mountain woods, with oak and hickory farther east.
